A different sort of Red and White ( non football related)

yesterday I was doing some cleaning out of some cupboards and the house I found this quilt that I made 8 years ago in a plastic Lincraft bag at the bottom of a big cupboard I was cleaning out.. It's funny I had completely forgotten about it. It's from my redwork faze, and the patterns are from a old Ladies Art Company catalogue I saw on the Internet once. ( The Ladies Art Co was a company that produced many pattern for redwork in it's hay day between 1900-40s. Being the nut I am I researched and learned all about redwork because that's what i do.)
It's a lap quilt I would say or a very small crib quilt and not quilted because well I couldn't be arsed and my skills weren't up to it. Like many things I've made in the past, I'm quite amazed to have made this, as I know now that sort of thing would drive me nuts. It's a bit wonky and crumpled (the crumpled part from sitting in at the bottom of a cupboard for 4 years or so)
Unfortunately it has a stain , and I was wondering if anyone had any advice of how to get it out?
I'm not really comfortable putting in the machine , being hand embroidered and all, i was thinking sard wonder soap, but would love any other suggestions.

Also if anyone would like it please put up their hand and say in the comments below. Don't worry I wont be insulted if no one wants it either. Being stained and a bit wonky. I just have so many of the things I've made including redwork and there really is a limit to how much I can keep.

Oh and how do I know it's from 8 years ago, because to be honest my favourite thing about this quilt is the fact that I signed and dated it ( probably knowing that i would completely forget about it and when I made it haha)
hope you're having a wonderful Sunday
xo

It's sweet! Some days you're in the mood to do that kind of thing; and then, some days you're not...

Mrs. Thrifty cleans stains this way:

I have NOT tried this method, I'm only sending alone the link.

Uh, that's "sending along the link". You think I would know how to proofread, being a former typesetter.

keep it Jess!!! Keep it!! Its lovely ...

I would try a paste made from nappy san- its evil i know but its good- get some nappy san and add say a teaspoon to a small bowl then add a tiny bit of water til it turns into a paste then put it on the stain and leave it over night, wash off the next day in cold water. repeat if necessary.

OMG@!!!! It's absolutely amazing Jess. Love it ever so :) What about good old fashion bleach? or is that a swear word nowadays ;) Hope you had a great weekend and not too sneezy with all that cleaning. We've been packing our bags for next weekend's departure to the trade fair and my big girl and I have gone through at least a whole box of tissues! ;) Kx

Love love love love love love love oh it's gushworthy and sweet and beautiful

(but I agree, Jess: don't give it away! It's a precious family heirloom!)

(oh, and a mix of metho and eucalyptus oil might do the trick)

You must call up that Shannon Lush woman on radio talkback and ask her. She knows the non chemical way of dealing with all stains. It is amazing Jess. I'm afraid I agree with the others, you must keep it. x

It's awesome. I love redwork too. Something so wholesome in its simplicity. I too researched all about it... because that is the kind of thing I do... we're two peas in a pod me thinks.

Don't give your gorgeous stained and wonky quilt away. It is too precious. Hang on to it. Take it to the footy and have it on your lap and stain it even more... with tears of joys from out great victories to come.

My dearest friend is a curator of collections for museum australia and i recently sought her help for a similar fabric problem, on my wedding dress. The likely hood is that these marks develop over time on fabric due to the presence of iron particles on the fabric which funnily enough come from water.

On her advice I bought a wonderful spray on dry cleaning fluid at safeway, unfortunately i can't remember it's name but it was the only one there in a pump spray bottle and i purchased it only weeks ago. It worked fantastically to spot clean the fabric and ensured that the whole dress was spared from harsh chemicals. The trick however was to then rinse the fabric in distilled water as this is de - ionised water. Dry as per normal and then store without worry of such funny rust marks appearing willy nilly.
