Maureen the Machine

Now that is has become obvious to our family that my grandmother will not be returning to her house, my aunts have been doing a heroic job of going through my grandparents possessions so someone else can move in. When they asked me if there was anything I wanted, I had only one thing on my mind.
My Grandma's 60 yr old Kenwood mixer. Which had come out on the boat with them from England when my dad was 11, and had been used to make all my grandmothers amazing cakes, pies and tarts.
I think my aunts were a bit surprised wanting something that "probably didn't work". But as well as loving it for the sentimental reasons, another one of eccentricities is I have a thing for old mixers. ( weird since I don't bake) a bit like people have for old sewing machines. I think they a beautiful bit of machinery. ( she does need a bit of a clean though)
Although Maureen is my first mixer. And she actually does work. Last night while changing her paddles, I decided to try to give her a whirl. and Whirl and mix did she. ( I admit I jumped up and down in excitement) She has all her pieces, except the vitamiser that broke ( im not too worried about that as I don't even know what it is)
Anyway I absolutely love her, and now to i might be more motivated to bake something, because I have her.
And its nice to when something happy or nice can come out of something sad. DOn't you think?

An old Kenwood! I am green with envy. Just imagine the rise of the sponge cakes and all the yummy things you can make. Congratulations on choosing wisely. Cherrie

How precious and full of meaning she is - and so gorgeous!! Yay that she still works - they were made very sturdy back then. I wish my mother hadn't chucked hers out (!)
So lovely that something good is coming from a difficult situation. Hugs to you xJ.

I totally get it. I have my grandma's crockery... it's not good stuff but I love it because it reminds me of eating her amazing cooking! That is one gorgeous mixer :) You're going to have fun with that I think... it'll be a baking blog in no time! ;) Kx

I know what you mean. When my late Nana moved out of her home I was given a few of her dishes including the glass potato salad bowl.

I still refer to it as this - she made old school potato salad with onion and egg in it and served it whenever we had a summer meal at her place. Every time I get it out I think of her.

You'll do the same with Maureen.

Maureen will be a fabulous kitchen companion I suspect... not least for her reminder of someone special.

I was given my gran's mixmaster too Jess. Made me feel like I was cooking with her when I used it. So many happy memories. I can't wait to see your fabulous baking as a result.
