On Saturday night I had the overwhelming urge to make a seal. I have wanted to make a seal for quite a while as I love seals- I know I say that about every animal i make, to be honest there really aren't many animals I don't love, except hyennas and fly and well also monkeys just don't do it for me. Especially baboons. I digress.ANyway the timing felt right with the seal so armed with some white/cream yarn and a basic pattern off i went.

It's funny I've talked before about the whole naming thing, and how it comes at different times with each one, but I'm not sure I've talked much about the whole issue of at what point do i know what I'm making is going to work and at what point, well I start to like it/love, feeling affection for.

Sometimes it's as soon as they have a head/face, other times not until they are completely finished or born, and quite a bit of the time it's not til the day after they've been finished. ( I often hate then when i first make them)
But with Sparky ( the seal) I knew pretty much as soon as he had eyes and a pinned on muzzle, in a half stuffed state, I was feeling the love for him.
And that his name was Sparky, partly due to the fact I think we bonded early so he felt more forthcoming in telling me his name.
Which meant that I spent a lot of yesterday afternoon and evening playing with , singing to ( he's conveniently shaped quite like a microphone which adds to the appeal) and talking to Sparky is his various stages of completion. ( the twitter girls were very patient with me)
Sparky also accompanied me out, take part in 3 conversations ( 1 quite political) listened to someones woes and managed to cheer them up.

Although one problem with Sparky is he is extremely distracting.

OMG Jess. Sparky is the best. My daughter Char is wild about seals and I can already imagine her squeal of delight when she lays eyes on him.
Long time no "see" hope you are well. looking forward to looking back at what you have been doing, as i have had no computer for ages!xxxxx
I can't get over him Jess! He is mesmerizing, I may be a bit over-emotional this evening but seriously, he's brought tears to my eyes...in the sweetest possible way. Love.
If he's a wild animal I'll eat my hat. He looks so friendly and cute just as if he'd like to be my friend. And yes he looks a tad serious too but understanding as well. I'd better get cracking and put a spark in my day or it will be all gone before I've done anything except blog. Cherrie
Thank you Sparky! You have completely brightened my day...
Cutest amigurumi critter EVER!!!!
Oh dear - I have two little peeps here who both want Sparky!
You've got the shape just perfect Jess - love him!xx
Awwww how cute is Sparky?
Jess - you are so talented!
I just love everything about this post. Being a kind of wild animal myself at times I can really relate to the Sparkster. But I doubt that I his charisma, what a truly adorable boy he is. I loved hearing about the processes you go through, and how your creatures reveal themselves along the way. I'm kind of envious as I am in a real creative black spot lately, but your work never ceases to inspire me. Rock on Jess x
Oh, Sparky is such a cute and lovely seal! Adorable creature!
Best wishes,
Tatyana

I heart Sparky.
You are so amazing Jess. I am totally inspired by you and your process. x
He doesn't look all that wild or fierce - I think he might be a cuddly seal
That last pic of Sparky is an absolute corked! And if Sparky doubles as a microphone, what amiguramied animal resembles an air guitar, do we think?
Love your blog...it's fun and Sparky is a great name for your seal (come mic), must try that with a bear sometime!
Warmest hugs,
Sandi

Oh my goodness, that is a CUTE seal! I love seals. They are one of Audrey's (big owlet) favourites too. You make such lovely little creatures, Jess. Our little black lamb is much loved by Maisie (tiny). Just the right size for her hand and so soft and friendly. xx
