Yesterday morning when I picked up Ferdy I discovered a moth had attacked his nose, he had three large gaping holes on the top, and both sides of his nose. SOme of his nose stuffing had come out too. I was devasted, as Ferdy is precious to me, and I know it sounds crazy but seeing one of my old guys like that was like seeing a pet or family member injured or suffering. And the fact that the bloody moth attacked his nose, his head, where so much of his character and soul is.
Also the fact the Ferdy is a very fragile old guy, the mohair is quite weak and repairing this would be difficult without causing more fraying.
But never-the-less I couldn't leave him there like that, I knew it would get worse and I couldn't handle seeing him like this. ( apologies for no pics of him in this holey state, but honestly I didnt want any record of him looking like this.)
So I set about to repair him, finding the closest possible match in my mohair scraps, carefully inserting them and stitching them into place ( at one point the hole left side of his nose collapsed,- so did I- and I had to restitch it together)
When I did, I couldn't believe it, at points I felt it had was mission impossible. His nose is nice and strong nose re-enforced on all sides.
I hope not too much his character is lost- I think he still looks like Ferdy- do you think I've done an Ok job?
(Ferdy before moth and repair)
I plan to stain the new parts of mohair I've added in to fit more with his original mohair.

Poor Old thing.
PS Do you know of any good natural remedies for keeping away moths? I dont want him to have to sit next a moth ball.

Poor Ferdy...
I think Cedar chips (as in the wood) are supposed to keep moths away?
You've done a great job of repairing him, I'm sure he's very grateful!
Poor old Ferdy alright!
I think dried lavendar is a natural repellant too - maybe Ferdy could have a little over the shoulder satchel bag filled with it?
Ouchy! Poor, poor old Ferdy.
I think you did a great job and that Ferdy would be proud of his new bits. I'm sure he's saying wonderful and kind things about you to all the other bears. XX
I think lavender is supposed to work too, otherwise you might have to pop him into a glass case to keep him away from horrible moths!
He is just precious...I think he is very proud of his new nose :)
how lucky is ferdy to have such a loving mum as to give him a brand new nose??!!!!
happy new year jess! i hope this year is YOUR year
x
You've done such a great job Jess!
He looks wonderful and full of character still!XXX
I have no moth remedies I'm afraid, but I'm sure you will find some info on the net. Ferdy looks as handsome and debonair as ever, you did a great job! As Kate said he is probably talking you up around town, watch out, you might get random moth eaten bears knocking on your door xo
I think you did a great job, just gives him a bit more character. I'm with the ladies who said lavender to keep away the moths.
Oh poor Ferdy. He looked a bit worse for wear but you have lovingly restored his self-esteem. I'm sure he feels much better now. He is lucky to have such a caring person looking after him.
Ditto on the lavender.
Lee:)
