the Death of Duckie

Today marks the passing of a dear friend, a trusty companion and loyal servant. My umbrella of 25 years Duckie has seen his last walk in the rain. Today when out walking in the ( freezing cold) rain, as I was trying to fix one of his spokey bits that has come undone, I noticed tiny little holes littered all over Duckies magnificent blue shield and realised that this would be our last outing together because unlike jumpers holes don't quite work in an umbrella.
It's a sad day, I've had Duckie since I was 4, and he has outlasted all new umbrellas, braved many storms and kept me dry all this time. To be honest I thought Duckie would last forever, but things rarely do.
Thank you Duckie for your fabulous years of service, for sheltering me, for keeping me company on my walks, always being there and above all your duckiness. There will never be another umbrella like you.
love
Jess xo
PS Please don't think for a moment Duckie is going anywhere near the bin. No! He is off to join all no longer functional or use by huge sentimental things in Jess hall of loved thing past (the cupboard)

Could you not give duckie a little refurb? I am sure you might be able to replace the umbrella part.
Loved you pot holders too.

Oooh no!!!! I have a Threads magazine article on how to re-cover umbrellas - would you like me to dig it out?

(PS. I used to have a pink version of ducky!)

ohh no, maybe Liesl can help little ol' Duckie.
what a great story Jess, now I think I may have to go and find my 4yr old an umbrella to treasure for many, many years.

What a beautiful post Jess. You are indeed a poet, in the disguise of a bear maker. I love Duckie, what a dear ducky face he has. I don't think he has passed away, maybe he has just retired. He has worked hard and now can sit in the hallway, nice and dry, knowing he will be loved forever xo
